​Wrinkle Prevention with Antioxidants

The loss of collagen as we age is the problem. Molecules called free radicals to contribute to this loss of collagen in our skin. UV rays in sunlight, cigarette smoke, and pollution abound with free radicals. The fewer the free radicals that we can avoid, the longer we can delay the onset of wrinkles. That’s not to say that avoiding free radicals altogether is advisable or even possible, but avoiding as many as we can help.


Everything has natural enemies. Cats, for example, are natural enemies of mice, and antioxidants are the natural enemies of free radicals. Avoiding as much exposure to free radicals as possible is good, but we also need to increase our consumption of the antioxidants that fight them.

Foods that are very high in antioxidants can help if we can include in our diets. Antioxidants help to counteract the damage caused by free radicals that cause a loss of collagen, elasticity, and firmness of the skin that causes wrinkles to form.

Think tomato! Tomatoes have an advantage of not only being high in antioxidants but also being high in lycopene. Lycopene has been proven to be effective in the prevention of some cancers. Red peppers are high in antioxidants and in Vitamins A and E and bioflavonoids. These are known to help moisturize and heal the skin. All red and dark orange-colored vegetables like beets and carrots are great wrinkle fighters.

Kale is rich in antioxidants, and it’s an excellent source of iron. Iron is good. It helps to bring blood to the skin. Kale is also rich in Vitamin A, which helps to prevent premature skin aging.

Blueberries are very high in antioxidants, too.

Salmon can help, too. It’s high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to fight inflammation and to be a great skin moisturizer.

Remember to drink lots and lots of water!
